Sweep The Leg…Do You Have A Problem With That?

Every once in a while the stars align, the gods look down upon us and smile, and something so fantastic occurs that it almost defies belief.

Such was today.

I saw a music video on-line today that is quite possibly the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. I’m not exaggerating when I write that I’ve watched it over twenty times. The song is called “Sweep the Leg” and it’s performed by No More Kings. William Zabka wrote and directed the music video, and let me tell you, it’s amazing.

The name William Zabka doesn’t ring a bell? Well, you probably know him as Johnny Lawrence, the baddest member of the Cobra Kai dojo, and the man who fell from glory at the All Valley Karate Tournament, thanks to one Mr. Daniel LaRusso.

There’s so many cool things about this video that I can’t get over it. All the Cobra Kai guys make an appearance, including Kreese. Daniel-san shows up. They recreated the All Valley tournament set. There’s a fantastic homage to “Raising Arizona,” and the lead singer counts the band in Japanese: ich, ni, san, chi.

Enough of my rambling”¦hajime:

Here’s a higher resolution version of the video.

One of the very first tournaments that I competed in was in New Orleans. Before each sparring match all the competitors hang around the ring and wait for their name to be called out to fight. I was incredibly nervous standing around waiting, and as I paced back and forth I looked over at the bleachers and saw one of the black belts from our club. He was waving at me, and when he saw that he had my attention, he pointed at me and silently mouthed “You’re the best” and then went into the Daniel-san crane kick position from the end of “The Karate Kid.” I laughed and tried to ignore him, but that only seemed to encourage him. By the time I was actually in the ring fighting he was close enough to the ring that I could hear him singing that damn song over the crowd.

I’m glad we’re not going to tournaments anymore. No doubt he’d be singing this song at me, too.

So was it oteke (the karaoke kid) or was it mike shitle? My be is on oteke.

  2. They actually called him “The Dude” at Scruffy’s. They’d announce his name over the PA that “The Dude is up next” and everyone would go crazy. It was insane.
